Amending a lyric from the 2008 song, Beyoncé wrote, “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it.” She concluded the handwritten note with the hashtag, #WeWillUnite4MarriageEquality! The post has received more than 200,000 likes.

The “Halo” singer, who recently performed at the Inauguration and Super Bowl, appears to be responding to California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense Of Marriage Act that are hot topics in the Supreme Court this week.

Those in support and opposition of Proposition 8 that bans gay marriage in California addressed the Supreme Court Tuesday. On Wednesday, the debate included the Defense Of Marriage Act that defines marriage as the union of members of the opposite sex and denies federal benefits to couples allowed to wed in their home state.

Beyoncé’s husband, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, voiced his support of same sex marriage in May. The rapper, who guests on Justin Timberlake’s song “Suit & Tie,” compared anti-gay marriage views to discriminating against blacks. “It’s discrimination, plain and simple,” he told CNN. He added, “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. ... That’s their business.”
